The Circa Acetate series by Jacques Marie Mage features limited-edition eyewear handcrafted in Japan from premium cellulose acetate—a plant-based, biodegradable, and hypoallergenic material derived from wood pulp and cotton linters.
Nearly all of JMM’s acetate is produced by Takiron, a historic Japanese factory with nearly a century of heritage dating back to the golden age of eyewear production. Handling and customizing this acetate is an arduous, highly complex art, as JMM famously utilizes extra-thick 10mm acetate sheets. By combining state-of-the-art machinery with time-honored artisanal practices, JMM produces exceptional, collectible pieces that meet the highest standards of craftsmanship.
WHAT IS CELLULOSE ACETATE?
Cellulose acetate is a biopolymer crafted from purified natural cellulose derived from wood pulp and cotton linters (the cellulose-rich fibers left on cottonseed after ginning). Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer on Earth. In 1865, French chemist Paul Schützenberger discovered that cellulose reacts with acetic anhydride to form cellulose acetate. Since then, this biopolymer has been used as a film base for photography, a synthetic fiber for textiles, and a premium material for eyewear frames.
Its use in eyewear began in the late 1940s, when the synthetic plastics of the era proved too brittle, often cracking under impact or in extreme temperatures.
HOW DOES CELLULOSE ACETATE DIFFER FROM PLASTIC?
Unlike petroleum-based plastics derived from petrochemicals (crude oil, coal, or natural gas), cellulose acetate is made from renewable, plant-based resources like wood pulp and cotton linters.
Furthermore, cellulose acetate is biodegradable. Under the right biological conditions, its cellulosic chain can be broken down by natural enzymes. In soil with high biological activity, cellulose acetate fibers can completely biodegrade within 4 to 9 months. In contrast, petroleum-based plastics can persist in the environment for hundreds of years.
WHERE DOES JMM’S CELLULOSE ACETATE COME FROM?
All Jacques Marie Mage acetate is exclusively produced by Takiron. Imbued with a rich manufacturing heritage, Takiron began by producing celluloid (a vintage eyewear material) before pivoting in the 1950s to create the world’s highest quality cellulose acetate.
The customization process is incredibly demanding, as JMM is the only active manufacturer to work with 10mm-thick acetate sheets. Producing these sheets requires two months for material extrusion followed by four months of curing. Original colorways are then achieved through a unique multi-block layering method known as lamination—a process that alone can take over eight weeks. Utilizing a process that seamlessly blends cutting-edge technology with artisanal mastery, we cut, dye, tumble, polish, and assemble eyewear that meets the pinnacle of craftsmanship and ethical responsibility.
